“Have a good night. Thanks for coming.” Johanna nodded at the last guest, locking the door behind the mother and toddler. She tucked the keys on the belt of her guard uniform and yanked on the door. That sound was one of her favorite things of the entire day. While she enjoyed watching people in her role as a guard at the Lindberg Museum for Fine Arts, it was her special joy to be alone within its hallowed halls. The night shift was her most favorite of all. Just her and the art. It spoke to her then in a way it never could when other people were about.

The late afternoon light filtered through the glass walls at the front of the building, shining across the stained glass panels in the gift shop. The blank white walls leading into the main part of the museum filled with colors, so much so it resembled a church.

That’s what it was to Johanna. A sacred place where she could be alone with her thoughts.

The high arched ceilings and large white walls were well met with blond wooden floors polished to a high gloss.

“Hey there, Jo.” Walter Krause, the museum director hurried to the front door, briefcase in hand. His gray suit was dusty and his face ruddy from exertion. “If I forgot to mention, we have an artist coming by to add her exhibit in the west wing. She might even be in there already, so if you see someone while you’re doing your initial rounds, don’t be upset.”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Sydney, the artist, wasn’t able to come this morning to meet Francis in Acquisitions, so she had to pop over tonight. She should be done in the next two hours. Can you make certain the temperature is reset in that wing and everything is ready to go for the morning?” He peered down his glasses at her.

“Certainly.” Jo smoothed her hands down her skirt. “Whatever I can do to help.”

“There’s a girl. I’d best get home before the missus starts phoning me every five minutes of the drive. She has guests coming tonight for some sort of French cookbook party and I’m to be the guinea pig.”

“Good luck, Sir.”

“I’m going to need it, I think.” He shuddered. “She’s been watching that Julia movie. I only hope I don’t come home to a pot of fish heads.”

Jo looked away and opened the door. “Have a good night, Sir.”

“You too. See you in the morning.”

She watched him scurry down the sidewalk toward the parking area and turned the lock with a satisfied click.

Silence. It was only the first hour of her shift, but it was the longest one.

Her footfalls echoed on the polished wooden floors as she began her walk of the east wing. Modern art was never her favorite, but the younger children seemed to like the overly bright colors and strange shapes. The art magnet program brought a select few high school students out to the museum three times a week and once in a while she caught one studying long after they should have caught the bus back to campus.
